This method has changed.
- Log in to office.com as an affected user.
- Click on the initials or the profile picture at the top right.
- Click on “Show account”. A new tab is opened
- Security information” is displayed in the left-hand column.
- Click on “Add method”.
- Select “App password” from the drop-down list and click ADD
- Give the app password a name, e.g. “HP Scanner”, and then click NEXT
- Copy your password to a safe place.

App passwords are required by apps that do not support two-step verification. A typical use case is use on a scanner with a shared mailbox.
You can create an app password on the following page:
https://account.activedirectory.windowsazure.com/AppPasswords.aspx
To set up an app password for a shared mailbox, you must log in with the respective account and then navigate to this page.
