If you are using a Mac (mid-2013 or later) with macOS Sierra or later (Apple Watch Series 1 and 2) or macOS High Sierra or later (Apple Watch Series 3 or later), you can instantly unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch when it exits sleep mode. You must be logged in to iCloud on your Apple Watch and your Mac with the same Apple ID.

Tip: To find out how old your Mac is, click on the “Apple” menu at the top left of the screen and then on “About this Mac”. The year of manufacture of the Mac is listed next to the model, e.g. “MacBook Pro (Retina, 13″, mid-2014)”

Apple Watch display with the message "Mark's MacBook Pro unlocked by this Apple Watch".

    Activate automatic unlocking

    1. Select “Apple” > “System Preferences” from the menu on your Mac.
    2. Click on “Security” and on “General”.
    3. Activate the option “Allow Apple Watch to unlock your Mac”.

If two-factor authentication is not enabled for your Apple ID account, follow the on-screen instructions and try enabling the option again. You can find more information in the Apple support article Two-factor authentication for the Apple ID.

WLAN and Bluetooth must also be activated for your Mac.
