BITV – Accessibility in IT

The BITV, or Barrier-free Information Technology Ordinance, is a German ordinance that specifically aims to improve the accessibility of information technology. This applies in particular to federal public bodies. If you work in IT or web development and develop your services or products for the public sector, you must ensure that they meet the requirements of the BITV.

The BITV is based on the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), which provide detailed criteria and techniques for the design of accessible web content. These guidelines are internationally recognized and form the foundation for the requirements of the BITV. By complying with the WCAG, you ensure that your websites, apps and other digital offerings can also be used by people with different disabilities. This includes, for example, providing alternative text for images, ensuring keyboard usability and adapting content for screen reader users. By implementing these guidelines, you not only help to meet legal requirements, but also improve the user experience for a broader target group.
